Axis Sports Medicine opens its first clinic in Dunedin

Axis Sports Medicine is proud to announce the opening of its new Dunedin clinic.

This is an important step in expanding access to expert, interdisciplinary care across the lower South Island. The clinic will provide specialist support in sports medicine, concussion management and rehabilitation, making it easier for local patients and referrers to access high-quality care closer to home.

The clinic will be led by a highly accomplished team including Dr Greg Macleod, Sport and Exercise Physician and Pete Gallagher, Specialist Sports Physiotherapy, alongside an experienced concussion team.

Meeting a clear need in Dunedin

Dunedin is home to a strong sporting culture and an active community with a growing demand for specialist sport and exercise medicine and concussion services. Until now, many referrers and patients in the region have had limited access to fully integrated specialist diagnosis, assessment and treatment.

By opening in Dunedin, Axis can bring its collaborative model of care directly to the community. The clinic will work closely with GPs, orthopaedic surgeons, other medical specialists, allied health professionals, schools and sports clubs to provide timely access to the right support.

Our goal is simple: to help recover, return to activity safely and stay well for the long term.

We offer a non-surgical pathway for patients with musculoskeletal conditions, improving access to timely assessment, early intervention, and conservative management. This service supports the orthopaedic community by giving surgeons and referrers another option for patients who may benefit from non-surgical care, including rehabilitation, expert clinical review, and, where clinically appropriate, interventions such as injections. By directing suitable patients into the right pathway earlier, Axis Dunedin can help surgeons manage wait times more effectively particularly for conditions where non-surgical treatment may be appropriate. The aim is to ease pressure on surgical waitlists while ensuring patients who do need surgical review are identified and referred appropriately.

Support for patients, referrers and the wider community

Our new clinic has been designed to support a broad range of patients, from young athletes and weekend warriors to elite sporting professionals managing injuries, concussion or ongoing issues.

For schools and sports clubs, access to expertise in concussion is especially valuable. Early assessment, clear management plans and safe return to learn, work and play are essential for positive outcomes. Our team is well placed to support acute injuries, complex concussion recovery and a safe return to sport.

For the wider Dunedin community, our clinic offers access to a connected team that assess, diagnose and manage injuries and conditions under one roof. This gives patients coordinated care and a clear treatment pathway, without the need to travel outside the region.

A straightforward referral pathway

As with all Axis clinics, our Dunedin clinic will provide a clear local referral option for GPs, physiotherapists and other primary care providers seeking expert support for their patients.

Referrals can be made for:

- Sport and Exercise Medicine

- Acute Concussion Clinic

- Complex Concussion Service

- Acute Knee Clinic

- Acute Shoulder Clinic

- Specialist Sports Physiotherapy

- General Physiotherapy

Patients can also speak with their GP or physiotherapist and ask to be referred to Axis. This can be especially helpful for those who are unsure which service is most appropriate and would benefit from guidance into the right care pathway.

Axis is committed to working alongside referrers to support mutual patients through practical recommendations, timely communication and a shared focus on achieving the best possible outcomes for patients.

Strengthening support for the community

Schools and sporting organisations play an important role in the Dunedin community, and quick access to experienced injury and concussion support is vital. Axis Dunedin will help strengthen that support by offering expert assessment, treatment and return to play guidance for student athletes, club players and active individuals.

Accessing care at Axis Dunedin

Patients can speak with their GP, physiotherapist or other primary care provider and ask for a referral to Axis Dunedin.

Whether they need sport and exercise input, concussion management, specialist sports physiotherapy or general physiotherapy, our interdisciplinary team can help guide them to the right service.

Axis Sport Medicine is excited to become part of the Dunedin community, and we look forward to supporting local referrers, patients, schools and sporting organisations with expert care that is accessible, practical and close to home
