Identifying and managing a potential concussion

A person cannot be properly diagnosed with a concussion until a doctor has seen them, but it is important to know some of the common indicators of a concussion and how someone can be safely managed between injury and seeing a medical professional.

How can I be seen? 

There are 2 ways you can be seen at Axis for a concussion.

  • Sports Concussion Clinic
    This is strictly for sports-related concussions with a referral within 4 weeks of the injury date. You can generally be seen within a week of your referral to start your recovery as quickly as possible.
  • ACC Concussion Service
    This is for more complex concussions and requires a referral from your GP (or other doctor, e.g. Urgent Care or Emergency Department doctor). This service brings together a team of concussion experts to support you back to health.

Our expert concussion team

In many cases, recovery from concussion is straightforward if you follow a plan and manage your activity. However, in some cases, recovery is not straightforward and can require specialised care, which is why we have brought together an team of medical and health experts with a variety of skill sets who we can call on to assist with your treatment. These providers could include:

  • Sport and Exercise Physicians
  • Neurologists
  • Vestibular Physiotherapists
  • Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Neuropsychologists
  • Clinical Psychologists
  • Nurses  


Our team are generally based together at our clinics, so your care will be well co-ordinated and delivered in a consistent familiar surrounding.

Make a booking

For sports related concussions suffered within the last 4 weeks, you need a referral from your GP, physio or other ACC registered health professional before booking with us.  


For the ACC Concussion Service you need a referral to be completed by your GP or other DHB health professional (this cannot be completed by a physio) and sent us before booking with us.
