To support faster, more effective care for your patients, we have introduced a new triage process for all GP-referred, ACC-funded, musculoskeletal problems.
Here’s what you need to know:
What is the new process?
We now offer a free 30-minute triage appointment (in-person or virtual) within 1–2 weeks of referral. This early assessment is designed to better understand the patient’s condition and identify opportunities for faster access to appropriate care — including rehabilitation and specialist intervention.
Please note: This process does not apply to acute knee, acute shoulder or concussion referrals.
Does this replace the specialist appointment?
No. The triage appointment complements and supports the specialist assessment. It allows us to:
- Understand the problem in more detail.
- Begin early rehabilitation where appropriate.
- Coordinate imaging or investigations if needed prior to the specialist appointment.
- Keep patients engaged while they wait for specialist input.
How does this benefit my patient?
Patients benefit by:
- Being seen sooner in an interdisciplinary care environment.
- Getting early education, guidance and support with their injury.
- Potentially starting treatment before seeing the specialist.
- Receiving consistent education and messaging across their care journey.
Will the triage delay their specialist appointment?
Not at all. In many cases, the triage process helps to expedite or better prepare for the specialist consult. Patients are still triaged for urgency and acuity. The triage appointment simply ensures no time is lost while waiting.
What do I need to do differently when referring?
Nothing — please continue to refer patients as usual. There’s no need to request the triage appointment specifically.
We recommend you let patients know they may be contacted for an initial triage appointment as part of our care pathway — but we’ll also explain this to them.
Why are we doing this?
We’ve implemented this process to:
- Reduce delays to care.
- Provide earlier support and reassurance to your patients.
- Enhance communication and the interdisciplinary practice between our team members to maximise our efficiency and capacity to see patients.
- Improve overall outcomes through a collaborative care model.
What if my patient declines the triage appointment?
If a patient declines the triage appointment, our support team will notify you. Your referral remains in place and the patient will remain on the waitlist for specialist review.
