Shockwave Therapy

Effective Pain Relief for Common Tendon Injuries

Ongoing pain and discomfort from injuries can be hard to manage, but shockwave therapy may be the solution you've been looking for. It has been shown to help reduce pain in soft tissue injuries by using very high-energy sound waves to stimulate the healing process. In some cases, shockwave has been shown to be more effective than three months of traditional rehabilitation.

Shockwave can be an effective treatment of the likes of

  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Gluteal and hamstring tendinopathy and pain
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tennis and golfers elbow

It is important to realise that not all shockwave machines are the same and that your treatment is conducted in line with international best practice. Our Swiss Dolorclast machines have robust clinical data to support their use.

How do I arrange shockwave?

If you are curious as to whether your condition might benefit from shockwave, we can arrange for you to see one of our team to advise whether it is appropriate for you. Shockwave is one of a range of treatments that can be used to treat injuries, and we need to make sure that this treatment is suitable for you.  If you are already seeing one of the Axis team, ask us if we think shockwave could assist in your recovery.

We also accept referrals from other clinicians like your orthopaedic surgeon, podiatrist or rheumatologist.

How does shockwave therapy work?

Shockwave therapy involves directing ultrasound shockwaves towards damaged tissue which in turn promotes healing. The shockwaves promote increased blood circulation and metabolism in the impact area, which accelerates the healing processes.  In the short term, most people see an improvement in their symptoms. This is due to a change in the way the body perceives pain. In the longer term, shockwave has been shown to help assist with tendon remodelling and healing.

How much does it cost?

In most cases, this treatment is not funded by ACC. Each treatment incurs a cost of $130 per session. In almost all cases, an initial course of three treatments is recommended.

Do I need a referral?

Not necessarily. It is however, important to ensure that there is a clear diagnosis and that shockwave therapy is an appropriate treatment for your condition. In many cases, we suggest a visit with one of our team prior to arranging an injection. We do however accept referrals from other medical professionals.
