Exercise Medicine Clinic

Is exercise the answer?

Regular physical activity has been shown to reduce the risk of the likes of dementia, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, colon cancer, breast cancer, hip fractures, depression and more. It could be the difference between managing your chronic condition, or not.

However, we know that if you have a chronic condition, simply being more physically active is not as easy as it sounds.

  • What type of exercise should I be doing?
  • How can I manage the pain or physical limitations of my condition?
  • How do I mitigate the risks associated with my condition?
  • Will I be safe exercising?
  • How do I know if I am making progress?

You can’t be expected to figure this out for yourself, nor can you rely on a trainer at the local gym.

Which is why we have set up a dedicated exercise as medicine clinic, with an onsite state of the art gym, staffed by a Clinical Exercise Physiologist. All overseen by a Sport and Exercise Physician.

How does the clinic work?

All our programmes are specially designed to work for both you and your condition. Our team of experts will work with you in assessing your condition and then developing an exercise programme to help achieve your goals.

We offer our patients two options:

A dedicated 12-week programme - Our team design an overall plan for you and work closely with you over 12 weeks to help you implement it. This includes:

  • A consultation and review with a Sport and Exercise Physician
  • A consultation with a Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP)
  • A specially designed 12-week exercise programme
  • Step by step guidance and support
  • Access to our onsite state-of-the-art rehab gym
  • Weekly exercise sessions supervised by our CEP
  • Ongoing monitoring so we can make necessary adjustments
  • A re-assessment at the end of the programme to check the progress and discuss an ongoing management and exercise plan
  • The option to continue in our supervised environment after the end of your programme.

A one-off consultation - Including assessment, and programme development. The ongoing management is left to you. It is perfect for those wanting to self manage their treatment.

Where necessary, patients can also be referred to our Registered Dietitian who has extensive experience working with patients suffering chronic illness including osteoarthritis and diabetes.

What can I expect?

  • Your programme to reflect and work for you and your condition.
  • To be cared for and supported in getting back into physical exercise.
  • To be looked after by a team of people who understand both exercise and medicine, and are experts at balancing the two.

You should expect some improvement whether that is a reduction in pain, or improvement in key health indicators, but we will discuss this with you before commencing your programme.

You can also expect some or all of the following

  • To feel stronger, more mobile, more in control and confident in your body.
  • An ease in any associated pain.
  • To be able to exercise independently, and be able to adapt your programme as necessary.
  • To have the confidence to take what you have learned and apply it in your own time.
  • To feel motivated to continue with your physical exercise.
  • A reduction of treatment side effects.
  • An increase in energy levels.

How much is it?

  • The cost of our 12-week programme starts at $170 per week*
  • The one-off consultation package is $350*

*Exact costs may vary depending on your insurance. Please check with your provider for your level of cover.
