How Does It Work?

You'll be seen by a team of medical experts with vast experience in sports concussion, and be taken through a comprehensive assessment. This enables us to diagnose your concussion accurately. From there, we will design a treatment plan, and if necessary, bring in specialist services to assist your recovery. In some severe cases, you may be referred on to our ACC Concussion Service.

What's involved in the assessment?

In your consultation, you'll be carefully monitored and assessed by our team, this includes a:

  • Thorough concussion history
  • Vestibular assessment
  • Clinical neurological and cervical spine examination
  • Cognitive function review

After this, we will be able to say whether you have a concussion, its severity, and discuss your recovery. We will also provide you with information on how to manage your concussion in your daily life.

Our Approach

Historically the most widely prescribed treatment for concussion was complete rest.  Over the past decade, it has become clear that this can make it less likely that a patient will recover quickly. While in most cases, it is still important to rest to some extent, it is increasingly recognised that taking a more proactive approach to treatment is beneficial.

At Axis, we employ this 'Active Recovery’ approach. This generally involves physical activity, physiotherapy techniques, and other treatments tailored to the patient's individual needs and symptoms. International research, including data collected at our clinics, has clearly shown that this approach leads to a more rapid and reliable recovery.

We aim to get you moving as quickly and as safely as possible, and in doing so, speed up your recovery and your return to sport.
